25 years since 9/11: How the Rocket City is remembering

It has been 25 years since the tragic terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001. A quarter of a century later, Americans still feel the effects of that day in just about everything we do.

Those of us who were alive that day remember it like it was yesterday. And while the tragedy of it is still hard to grasp, we can look back at the heroics of those who responded to the attacks in New York City and Washington, DC, with respect and admiration. That’s what the events here in the Huntsville area this coming weekend are for.

We remember those who lost their lives, those who saved lives and those who risked their lives. We have multiple events here in the area you can attend:

9/11 Exhibit @ Guntersville Museum

• What: Guntersville Museum is marking the 25th anniversary of 9/11 with a special local history and veterans exhibition opening on September 10, which features local artifacts, personal stories connected to the 9/11 tragedy, and a tribute to Marshall County residents who served during the Global War on Terror.

9/11 Remembrance Ceremony @ HFR Station 1

• What: Mayor Tommy Battle and Huntsville first responders will honor victims and first responders, featuring a moment of silence and sounding of sirens.

We Run To Remember @ Fleet Feet

• What: This event is a 3.8-mile memorial walk/run symbolically representing the climb up and down both Twin Towers.

9/11 Memorial Stair Climb + USA Patriots Softball Game @ Toyota Field

• What: The Rocket City Trash Pandas will welcome the community to Toyota Field for two special events this weekend. They are hosting a September 11 Memorial Stair Climb on Friday morning, and the USA Patriots Amputee Softball Team’s matchup against AUSA Redstone-Huntsville on Saturday evening for Military Tribute Night.

Huntsville 9/11 Heroes Run @ Toyota Field

• What: This run/walk event features a 5K run, 5K ruck, and 1-mile walk/run to honor 9/11 heroes and post-9/11 service members.
