Decatur residents rejoice — the city is now one step closer to easing those infamous Tennessee River bridge backups.

U.S. Representative Dale Strong helped the city secure $3M in federal funding, made available through the Fiscal Year 2026 Community Project Funding, which will go towards studying where a third Tennessee River bridge could be built.

Specifically, it will look into potential bridge and roadway alignments, traffic needs, community impact, preliminary costs and more.

Motorists in the area know how prone the U.S. 31/Alabama 20 bridges are to traffic congestion, and a new river crossing has been a priority for city planners as far back as 2019.

“This project is crucial to improving traffic flow across the Tennessee River, and beginning this study is the next step in addressing the city’s long-held priority. Our residents deserve efficient and reliable infrastructure, and my administration will continue to work alongside our state and federal partners to move this project forward.”

Kent Lawrence, Mayor of Decatur in a statement

This study is the first step in a project that could take upwards of 10 years.
