5 awesome volunteer opportunities in Huntsville

If you’re a senior in high school who needs volunteer hours or a citizen who is looking for a way to help your city grow, there are plenty of volunteer opportunities in the Huntsville area.

We’ve compiled a list of just a few organizations that offer several ways for people to get in touch with their fellow citizens and community.

1. City of Huntsville Animal Services

Volunteers are needed at Huntsville Animal Services at all times the shelter is open. All volunteers have a range of responsibilities, and the friendly staff is available for questions or extra help at every step of the way. Activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Cleaning pens + cages
  • Walking animals
  • Brushing + grooming animals
  • Greeting people who enter the shelter
  • Processing lost + found reports
  • Assisting with special events

Anyone 16 years of age or older may apply!

2. Huntsville Botanical Garden

There’s always a fun volunteer opportunity open at Huntsville Botanical Garden! There are general opportunities available to anyone interested, as well as a separate Youth Volunteer Program for teenagers (ages 13-18) in the summertime. Activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Helping out with events
  • Administrative support
  • Leading tours + driving shuttles
  • Visitor center support
  • Education assistance
  • Gardening assistant

Anyone 14 years of age or older can apply, and you must be accompanied by a guardian if you are younger than 16.

3. Manna House

Manna House has been giving back to the greater Huntsville community for nearly 17 years. There are volunteer opportunities available every week, so be sure to come by and work with an awesome team of individuals. Volunteer activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Nightly food distribution
  • Outdoor church service
  • Backpack program for elementary school children

Volunteers of all ages are welcome, and no documentation is necessary.

4. Gentiva Hospice

No matter how you choose to help out at Gentiva, you’re always making a difference. You don’t need any medical training to be a volunteer — you’ll be trained in grief counseling, spiritual + emotional support + end-of-life care. Volunteer opportunities include, but are not limited to:

  • Share stories with patients
  • Run errands
  • Provide administrative support

Anyone at least 18 years of age or older may visit patients, and anyone 16 or older may volunteer in the office.

5. Operation Green Team

You can help continue Huntsville’s legacy as a beautiful place to live by volunteering with Operation Green Team. Work with a team of like-minded people who are passionate about keeping the Rocket City green. Volunteer opportunities include, but are not limited to:

  • Citywide cleanups
  • Event volunteers
  • Hosting neighborhood cleanups
