5 talented jazz artists in Huntsville—catch their upcoming performances

Huntsville’s music scene is rapidly expanding and getting lots of attention—from the Orion’s inaugural season to a whole “Music Month” proclaimed by Mayor Tommy Battle last year.

Needless to say, Huntsville’s always on the lookout for good music. Jazz music is a bit harder to come by in Huntsville than other genres, but we’ve still got some talented local musicians bringing jazzy sounds to the area.

Check out these 6 jazz artists and where you can find them in the Huntsville area.

1. Huntsville’s In the Mood Big Swing Band

In the Mood Big Swing Band was founded in 2014, and it’s nicknamed the “Glenn Miller band of North Alabama” with their mission to keep Glenn Miller’s legacy alive.

In the Mood is a 21-member band, and you’ll find 18 members at many of their events which range from corporate fundraisers to swing dance to Panoply!

2. The Sonosphere Jazz Combo

If you’re looking to enjoy some incredible jazz music in an awesome atmosphere, catch the Sonosphere Jazz Combo. They make occasional appearances at Rocket Republic, so look out for performance announcements on their Facebook page and events calendar.

3. Josh Couts + Friends

You can hear the jazz talent Josh Couts along with musicians like Gary Wheat and Kevin Sledge at The Casual Pint in Providence.

Couts got his bachelors degree in music from UAH and his masters degree in Modern American Music from Longy School of Music of Bard College in Boston. After earning his masters degree, he returned to Huntsville, where he has been both a performer and music educator.

4. Dave McConnell

One of the most well-known jazz artists in the Huntsville community is Dave McConnell, who has over 20 years of experience performing. He frequently sets the mood at popular Huntsville spots like Stella’s and CO/OP Community Table and Bar.

Affectionately referred to as “The Sinatra Guy,” McConnell’s smooth vocals bring the retro vibe of the ’50s and ’60s to Huntsville.

5. Twickenham Jazz + Swing

You may have spotted Twickenham Jazz + Swing at big venues like the Von Braun Center, Toyota Field and the Orion Amphitheater.

The sheer size of the venues that this group has performed at is a testament to their incredible talent.
