“Wait… is that like kosher?”

Huntsville is a melting pot of many different cultures and nationalities. With approximately 25% of the global population eating halal (according to ISA), we found six local restaurants that accomodate this dietary preference.

What makes food halal?

“Halal” simply means that the food in front of you was prepared according to Islamic law, similar to food being kosher. That means the animal was:

  • Treated humanely + with respect it’s entire life
  • Slaughtered by a sharp knife to the neck for a quick + painless death
  • Not allowed to see other animals being slaughtered
  • Healthy + free of diseases when slaughtered
  • Drained of all blood before preparation
  • Slaughtered by a Muslim, Christian or Jewish butcher

While I am not Muslim, I appreciate halal certifications as a way to know the animal I am eating lived and died ethically. Check out some of my favorite spots below.👇

1. Jamo’s Cafe

Jamo’s Cafe is a family-owned casual dining restaurant serving up Mediterranean dishes across the street from their Middle Eastern grocery store.

“Everything I have tried has been great. The kofta wraps are my go to.

During Ramadan, my roommates and I would stop by to pick up food and the owner would give us dates to break fast with.”

Paxton Mew, Jamo’s Cafe customer

2. Wings & Gyros

Wings and gyros under one roof? Count me in. While not everything on the menu is halal, all of their wings are—making this spot a must for flavor lovers with dietary restrictions.

3. Al Shish Palace

Your spot for late night grub: Al Shish Palace is open until midnight serving a wide variety of burgers, wraps and traditional Mediterranean meals.

Be on the lookout for their second location, Yaseen Kabob, opening soon off Madison Blvd.

Pro Tip: Try their baklava with Turkish coffee for two.

4. Scoop & Slice Cafe

Even the pepperoni is halal.
