To qualify for the award, schools generally fall into one of two categories:

Exemplary High Performing Schools
These schools rank in the top 15% of their state in both reading (or English language arts) and mathematics based on state tests. High schools also need graduation rates in the top 15% of the state.

Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools
These schools successfully close the achievement gap among different student groups, such as students with disabilities, English learners and economically disadvantaged students. They must rank in the top 15% of the state regarding the improvement of these groups.

Nominated schools complete a detailed application describing their teaching methods, curriculum, leadership and student support. The U.S. Department of Education reviews the application to ensure the school meets high national standards, maintains a safe learning environment and involves the local community.
