Let’s face it, as we get older, we may find it harder to get involved in team sports — as a kid there are so many more options — but you don’t have to place that competitive spirit on the shelf here in the Rocket City because the area offers some great adult sports leagues all over town.

Whether you are a casual athlete or uber-competitive, community sports are a great way to stay active and social at the same time. Check out these adult sports leagues here in the Huntsville area:

Adult hockey leagues

We all know how popular hockey is here in Huntsville. And it’s not just for kids and teens, either. You can join the North Alabama Hockey Association – Senior Open League if you are over 18, and it doesn’t matter what your skill level is.

The league has a summer and fall season, and all the games for the Senior Open League are played weekly every Sunday afternoon/ evening. Game times vary but usually start as early as 4PM and can start as late as 10PM.

Adult Sports Leagues

Founded in 2018, the Rocket City Curling Club is the first club in Alabama dedicated to the Winter Olympic sport of curling. The club meets at the Ice Sports Center in Huntsville.

New leagues start three to four times a year, and the club always looking for new members. No equipment is necessary, as the club has brooms and sliders for members to borrow.

The Rocket City Curling Club’s weekly fall curling leagues are starting soon, with open and beginner leagues will take place on Saturday evenings, starting on September 23.

Pickleball, anyone?

If you have never heard of pickleball, you must have spent the last couple of years in hibernation, because this is a sport that is growing so rapidly in popularity that it’s hard to drive by a tennis court in this area and not see some folks playing.

The Huntsville Pickleball Club not only teaches beginners how to hone their pickleball skills, but also puts together competitions and schedules matches throughout the city.

Join the soccer craze

Regardless of your soccer skill level, the Huntsville area has a league or team you can join if you want to lace up the cleats and play some soccer (or football, as it were).

Here are some of the leagues in town:

Dust off the high tops and join a Huntsville adult basketball team

Huntsville has multiple opportunities for adults to join basketball leagues in town.

The YMCA Adult Basketball Leagues are a great way to not only stay active, but also to be part of a team and socialize. The YMCA adult leagues are open to all experience levels, so no matter if you’re a beginner looking to learn the fundamentals of basketball, or you’re an advanced player looking to hone your skills in a more competitive environment, there’s a spot for you in the YMCA league.

The City of Huntsville also has adult basketball leagues that play from early January to mid-February. The league includes 10 games, including a single elimination tournament. You can sign up for the City of Huntsville Men’s Basketball League on the city’s website.

Join the Huntsville Rugby Club

Rugby has also grown in popularity here in the Rocket City, and there are men’s and women’s leagues to join of you are interested in playing. The Huntsville Rugby Club is one of the state’s oldest rugby leagues, having formed in the 1970s.

Get into volleyball

The City of Madison hosts a co-ed volleyball league for players ages 18 and up. Choose from two different divisions: a recreational division for casual players and a competitive division for more skilled players. There are spring, summer and fall leagues.

Also, if you are into beach volleyball, Huntsville has leagues that play at John Hunt Park, giving people of all levels the opportunity to compete and enjoy a fun environment. The leagues will typically take place over an 8-week period, including round robin play and playoffs. Learn more about adult beach volleyball leagues here.

And of course, there’s softball

Adult softball leagues have been around for decades, and Huntsville has its fair share of opportunities to get involved, whether you want to play on a co-ed team, all men’s league or all women’s league.

Huntsville Parks & Recreation hosts leagues that consist of three seasons (spring, summer and fall) for weekday play, consisting of 10 games and double elimination post-season tournament.

The Sunday league will have one season (spring) with 10 games and double elimination post-season tournament.

Madison and Huntsville each have men’s, women’s and co-ed softball leagues throughout the year. Sign ups for Madison leagues don’t appear to be active right now, but you can sign up for the Huntsville spring league on the Parks & Recreation website.
