Another Food City location among new high-dollar building permits

Of the nine new building permits issued statewide for construction projects exceeding $1 million, eight are for projects in North Alabama.

Two major projects — a new Food City location off Old Gurley Road and a facility off I-565 — are right here in Huntsville. Here’s what we know:

Another Food City location

As most Huntsvillians know, the Virginia-based grocer Food City plans to open six new locations in Huntsville over the next few years. A $5 million building permit was issued this past week to Food City’s parent company, KVAT Food Stores, for a store at 150 Old Gurley Road NE.

Here are a few quick facts about Food City and these new stores in Huntsville:

Food City will invest $90 million to build the six new stores in Huntsville.
The stores will create 1,350 jobs over the next five years.
The City of Huntsville will provide cost reimbursements up to $9 million (total for all six locations opened) in sales tax to offset a portion of the company’s infrastructure costs incurred for construction of the six locations.
Projected revenues calculate a two-year return on investment for the City (or projected revenues indicate the city will recover its investment within two years).
