More than five years after throwing his last pass in the National Football League, Athens native and former NFL All-Pro quarterback Phillip Rivers is back in the NFL (at least for a little while).
According to multiple reports, Rivers is set to sign with the practice squad for the Indianapolis Colts.
The 44-year-old quarterback last took a snap in the league in 2020 before taking the head coaching job at St. Michael’s Catholic School for the 2021 season. In five seasons, he’s led the Cardinals to a 42-16 record including consecutive 4A semifinal appearances.
Earlier this week, the Colts saw starting quarterback Daniel Jones go down with a season-ending injury. Now, backup and fellow Alabama native Riley Leonard is reportedly dealing with a knee injury.
So Indianapolis saw a need to add more depth to its quarterback room and gave Rivers a call. Rivers played for the Colts in 2020 before retiring.
