High school football season kicks off this week, and as local schools prepare for the new season, one area school has a brand new team to field.
Athens High School will begin its very first flag football season this year, with its first game scheduled for August 26.

Flag football became an Alabama High School Athletic Association sanctioned sport in 2021. The popularity of the sport for female student-athletes spread rapidly, and more schools have started fielding teams to keep up with the demand.
The Golden Eagles will play a 13-game season against schools from the Huntsville, Madison and Decatur area.
“We are very excited about starting this new program in Athens. We had over 60 girls tryout and were able to pick 19 girls that we feel can compete at a high level. Most of our players are multi-sport athletes, many of whom are going to play college athletics.”
Coach Stace Tedford
Flag football is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, so much so that it has been added to the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
