Unhitched Wheeler Lake

Just 41 miles west of Huntsville, the Unhitched Wheeler Lake RV Park (which recently changed from Decatur/Wheeler Lake KOA Holiday) in Hillsboro has a small beach and swimming area with a floating dock. This little spot is perfect for sunbathing and then wading in for the occasional cooling dip or float. For those looking to serve higher energy, the beach has a volleyball net, too.

While you can buy a day pass for all of this, you can also book a campsite, RV spot or cabin to turn your beach day into a relaxing retreat. Bonus: the campground’s pavilion often hosts live music events on weekends.

🎸 Upcoming Music Festival: The 2nd Annual Wheeler Lake Paloosa, featuring music by over a dozen bands + more, is set for June 19-20, 2026.

Cowford Landing @ Round Island Recreational Area

A 39-mile trek from Huntsville to Limestone County brings you to the Round Island Recreational Area’s Cowford Landing, which the county parks and recreation department manages in coordination with TVA, the property owner.

While RV campers rave about this long-established campground for its friendly people and views, you don’t need a campsite to enjoy the swimming area and beach.

  • When: Dawn to dusk (the beach area)
  • How Much: Visiting the beach and swimming area is FREE | Campground rates start at $40 per day for RVs, pop-ups + campers. No tent sites are available.
