Big Spoon Creamery named one of the best ice cream shops in U.S

Alabama-based Big Spoon Creamery has been named one of the most travel-worthy ice cream shops in the United States by The Washington Post (August 2026).
The Post asked ice cream experts across the country to nominate standout local creameries — no chains, no grocery store brands
Big Spoon made the cut alongside just six other shops from across the country.
Owned by Ryan and Geri-Martha O’Hara, Big Spoon opened their first brick-and-mortar location nearly a decade ago at MAKEbham in Birmingham’s Avondale neighborhood, and expanded to Huntsville in 2023 at 201 Jefferson St N Ste J, Huntsville, AL 35801.
What makes Big Spoon worth a trip?

Big Spoon hand-makes their ice cream using ingredients sourced from a 4th generation dairy farm and and locally sourced fruits.
Here’s what the Post says you should order when you visit:
- Peach buttermilk (in the summer)
- Bourbon peach pecan crisp
- Blackberry cobbler
- Goat cheese
- Strawberry
- Hibiscus
“We are honored to have been included in the Washington Post’s article. We are happy that we can help shine a light on Birmingham as a food city that is worth traveling to!”
Caitlin Miley Hoyle, Big Spoon Director of Operations
This is not the first time Big Spoon has caught the eye of ice cream connoisseurs and national publications.
In June 2026, Tasting Table, the national foodie digital site named the creamery the best in Alabama. Back in 2021, Food & Wine Magazine recognized the gourmet ice cream shop, which also has incredible ice cream sandwiches, the best in the Yellowhammer State.
Big Spoon Creamery has locations in Birmingham, Homewood and Huntsville.
