A couples’ getaway is something that many want to do, but don’t feel like they can. In Huntsville, there are numerous opportunities for couples to have a little getaway without traveling out of the city.

To many people, it’s been a long summer. Especially for parents of kids who’ve been on break, school starting back may feel like a breath of fresh air in some ways.

Whether you live in Huntsville or are visiting from out of town, there’s no shortage of activities that are excellent for relationship building, including ones that are just plain fun.

Explore the possibilities with these three activities bound to make you feel you’re on vacation, even if you don’t leave town.

Everyone’s heard of Space Camp in Huntsville, which attracts many families who wish they could send their kids to space, instead sending them to the next best thing. Here’s what not many people know: the same event is available to adults as well making a perfect couples’ getaway.

Graduate from interactive missions and learn what it takes to be an astronaut by going through this program and bring out your inner adventurer.

Despite the booking price of $899 per person, amenities for this 3-day academy include on-site sleeping arrangements and meals from Friday evening to Sunday morning—not to mention the value of knowledge and state-of-the-art equipment you’ll be using.

If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to make pasta with ingredients and equipment provided for you, Rafael’s Table is your place. Formerly located at Lowe Mill, their new location is ready and open for business making a perfect little couples’ getaway.

Classes aren’t their only offering. They also have a gourmet kitchen shop for both ingredients and equipment for purchasing that you won’t find many other places.

Their cooking classes start at $95, and are generally two hours long. For a full list of classes, click here.

Pottery class

It’s never too late to pick up a new hobby, especially for the more creative types (Hville Blast)

Ceramics have lasted for hundreds of years for a reason. Pottery making is a fun, challenging and rewarding activity and one I believe everyone should try at least once.

The Vessel at Stovehouse gives couples the opportunity to embrace their more creative side and form something from their own hands. Their Date Night class costs $130 and covers two people. Reserve your spot here.

In two hours, couples get to learn how to make foundational items such as a bowl, cup and plate, and at the end of the lesson get to pick two items of which to keep. It’s not a long activity, but perfect for a couples’ getaway who just want a few hours of fun.

What to make of couples’ getaways

No matter what, I’m a believer in it’s not what you do, but who you do it with. Every once in a while it’s fun to get out of your comfort zone and, say, make pasta or pottery, or simulate zero gravity. But more importantly, go out and have fun with it with your favorite person.
