A month after curbside recycling was suspended in Decatur–and, subsequently, Athens– the City of Decatur said the city hopes to resume recycling operations within the next two to three weeks as repairs move forward at the city’s recycling processing facility.

The pause in service is the result of a recent failure of the baler system at the city’s recycling processing facility. This has affected recycling services in Athens as well.

Parts needed to repair the failed baler system are expected to arrive in the coming days, according to city officials. Once received, crews will begin installation and testing to bring the system back online.

During the service pause, City crews are performing maintenance on other equipment at the facility to improve overall operations ahead of the program’s restart.

In addition, the Decatur City Council has approved funding to purchase a second baler. The additional equipment will strengthen the city’s recycling operations and help reduce the risk of future service disruptions.

“We know how important recycling is to our residents. Our team is working diligently to complete repairs and get the program back up and running as quickly as possible. We remain fully committed to providing reliable recycling services for our community.”

Wanda Tyler, Recycling Program Director

City officials said recycling remains suspended and in the meantime:

  • Recycling collection routes are not operating.
  • Residents should not place recycling carts at the curb for pickup.
  • Solid Waste trucks cannot collect recycling carts during this time.

Residents are encouraged to hold recyclable materials at home if possible. Materials may also be placed in regular household garbage until service resumes.
