We’re always looking for unique hidden gems in Huntsville to share with you, and we found a another great one. Did you know Huntsville is home to a hidden Japanese Garden? Here’s everything you need to know about this scenic and peaceful secret spot.
Where can you find it?
You can find the garden in Monte Sano State Park, and the closest area to park is near the Monte Sano Lodge. Across the street, the garden’s paths are hidden from the road. A guzei, the arched red bridge associated with Japan, invites travelers to walk through a trail covered by bamboo.
A Japanese tea house sits adjacent to a zen garden, which offers visitors a quiet place to think or meditate.
The history of the Japanese garden
The Japanese garden was started in 1988 by Robert Black as a hobby to do with his children. The tea house was added in 1991, and the first annual Japanese spring festival occurred there in 1992. The yearly festival celebrates Japanese culture through tea ceremonies, koto (the Japanese harp), Japanese dance, Taiko (Japanese drums), karate and kendo.
