Nature Journaling in the Fall: Exploring Seeds and Nuts

Join us for a hands-on nature journaling experience designed to introduce you to the core principles of this enriching practice through the lens of the seeds and nuts of the fall landscape. Everything from our local regal Black Walnut to the most unassuming grasses will inspire our work and learning. We will focus on the aspects of seed and nut biology that will help us better describe them in writing and in pictures, then work through strategies for sketching them in the field. We will begin with an introductory session indoors before moving outside to apply our learning together.

What is Nature Journaling? Nature journaling is a multidisciplinary practice that involves documenting and creatively exploring the natural world in various ways, such as visual arts, writing, and scientific observation.

All materials will be provided.

Additional Information: This class will take place in-person at the Huntsville Botanical Garden. It will start indoors and finish out in the Garden.

About Your Instructor:

Laramie (Smith) Aközbek is the President of the Alabama Nature Journal Club and is passionate about helping others build deep connections with the natural world. She enjoys scientific and botanical illustration, and loves to use art as a means of capturing and communicating complex topics. She is a plant biologist and conducts research at the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology while working toward her PhD in Plant Genomics with Auburn University. Outside of the lab, she enjoys hiking throughout Alabama with her husband documenting the local flora and fauna.
