Ground broken on new Food City store on Governors Drive

The grocery store chain Food City broke ground this week on one of its six new Huntsville locations off Governors Drive between Stovehouse and The Foundry.

This location is the second Huntsville-area Food City store now under construction.

According to a statement from Food City’s parent company, KVAT Food Stores Inc., the Governor’s Drive location has an expected opening date in the first quarter of 2025.

The grocer broke ground on the Hampton Cove store — off US 431 and Taylor Lane — in July of last year.

The Virginia-based grocery company is investing $90 million to build six new stores and create 1,350 jobs over the next five years. When the announcement was made last spring that the chain would open these new stores, the company said the stores are to open in two phases:

Phase I

  • Hampton Cove
  • North Memorial Parkway
  • U.S. 72 East

Phase II

  • Downtown Huntsville
  • Alabama 53
  • County Line Road

Here are a few quick facts about Food City and these new stores in Huntsville:

  • The grocer will invest $90 million to build the six new stores in Huntsville.
  • The stores will create 1,350 jobs over the next five years.
  • The City of Huntsville will provide cost reimbursements up to $9 million (total for all six locations opened) in sales tax to offset a portion of the company’s infrastructure costs incurred for construction of the six locations.
  • Projected revenues calculate a two-year return on investment for the City (or projected revenues indicate the city will recover its investment within two years).  
  • The Company will not qualify for any cost reimbursements until all new stores in Huntsville are completed and open to the public.
