Handy Rec Center among new building permits in North Alabama

Of the 14 new building permits issued statewide for construction projects exceeding $1 million this past week, four are for projects in North Alabama.

Among those new building permits is a project to renovate the W.C. Handy Recreation Center in Florence, a $1.1 million projects. Here’s what we know about these projects in North Alabama:

Handy Recreation Center in Florence

The Handy Recreation Center is Florence is set to undergo renovations, a project that has been in the works for some time now. The rec center, built in the 1950s, has been in need of upgrades for a while, and the Florence City Council approved the renovation project in April.

Upgrades include:

New plumbing
Upgrades to the recreation areas
New fencing and shade for the center’s pool
Upgrades to the restrooms and locker rooms

The project is expected to cost $1.1 million. Butler Construction Company is the lead contractor for the project.
