Madison County’s diverse terrain lends itself to some challenging — or fairly basic — running routes. So if you are looking to sign up for a 10K or 5K run here in the Huntsville area, you can find some coming up that vary in difficulty.

Here are some 5K and 10K runs coming up in the next couple of months:

1. David McKannan Memorial 5K

One of the first 5K or 10K runs of the season is dedicated to avid runner David McKannan. (Huntsville Track Club)

This run is held in memory of David McKannan, an avid runner, loving father, husband and brother who lost his battle with ALS in 2012. The 5K race begins at 7:00 a.m. at Ditto Landing (293 Ditto Landing Rd SE, Huntsville, AL 35803). The course is flat and fast running along the shaded paths and along the river.

2. Smoke Rise Trail Run

This trail run includes a half marathon, 10K and 5K run through the scenic Blevins Gap Nature Preserve in Huntsville.

3. Cotton Row Run

This Memorial Day weekend run has been a Huntsville staple since 1980, and follows a 10K, 5K and 1-mile course through downtown Huntsville. This is one of the more manageable 5K and 10K runs in town.

4. Eurocross 5K

Eurocross is the perfect combination of the athleticism and spectator attraction of steeplechase with the challenge and varied terrain of cross-country. This event includes a 5K and an 8K race.

5. Big Foot Trail Run

This trail run includes a 5K and 10K course and is part of the Land Trust’s “Wild Thangs” trail races.
