Historic Goldsmith-Schiffman Field to get a new look

One of Huntsville’s iconic sports venues is due for a face-lift. Goldsmith-Schiffman Field in Historic 5 Points is set to undergo a refurbishment soon.

Here’s what we know:

Refurbishing Goldsmith-Schiffman Field

The City approved a design services contract with Foresite Group to begin design work on the Goldsmith-Schiffman Park Development project. Foresite will be responsible for civil engineering and landscape architecture on the park.

The plan for the project includes:

• Pickleball courts
• A grass lawn with space for two flag football fields
• A new concession/restroom building
• A playground

Goldsmith-Schiffman Field, located at 302 Beirne Ave. NE, opened in 1934 as a high school football stadium and functioned as such up until recently. Distinguished by the stone wall that encircles the facility, the field now hosts flag football games.

The refurbishment effort will aim to maintain as much of the stadium’s original architecture as possible. Much of the stone wall is expected to remain in place, though it must undergo a structural engineering evaluation.

Updating Huntsville’s sports venues

The refurbishment — and repurposing — of Goldsmith Schiffman Field is the latest in an effort to update some of Huntsville’s sports venues. Joe Davis Stadium, once home to the Huntsville Stars baseball team, was used for years for high school football in addition to Minor League Baseball.

When the Stars left Huntsville, it remained in use as a football stadium, but was in dire need of updating.

After more than a year of renovations, Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville re-opened to host the home games for the Huntsville City FC, our new professional soccer team.

The remodeling project, which cost approximately $30 million, began in late 2021, before the announcement of the Huntsville City Football Club’s existence. The excitement surrounding not only the stadium itself but developments adjoining the stadium spread as the project came to fruition.
