The season of giving is here. If you’re short on time but have been searching for low-effort ways to help those in need, keep reading.
If you’re a Madison County resident, you can easily give back through your utility bill! Learn how you can help elderly and disabled locals in need this winter for as little as $1 a month. 👇
Set it + forget it donation through Project Share

Yes, it really is as easy as donating through your utility bill. Huntsville Utilities launched the Project Share initiative in December 1988 to make sure all community members have access to an often overlooked basic need: utilities.
Funds collected through Project Share help elderly, disabled and handicapped customers pay utility bills during the most frigid months—January to March.
💸 Set it + forget it: By adding just $1 or more to your monthly utilities, you can directly help those in need make it through the winter.
100% benefits the community + it’s tax-deductible
🤝 Who you’re supporting through your donation:
- Utility customers aged 62+ or those certified as disabled or handicapped
- Income Limitation: Must be on a low or fixed income designated by Alabama Department of Human Resources (potential recipients screened by Salvation Army)
In addition to sharing funds with families to pay for utility bills, Huntsville Utilities designates 30% of Project Share donations to energy-saving home projects.
- 🛠️ What does this mean? The Huntsville Utilities team goes to qualifying low-income residents’ homes to make valuable renovations, helping them save money in the long run. Watch the video above to hear how Huntsville Utilities served one local resident!
🏠 Quick stats:
- Since 1988:
- 31,575 families assisted
- $6,010,381.22 in community contributions
- From January-March 2025:
- 811 families assisted
- $193,436.50 in community contributions
- That’s $238.52 per family!
💸 Bonus: Donations are tax-deductible! Sign up for Project Share by the year end to deduct from your taxes.

Hear from a local contributor
“Project Share addresses a basic need in our community: keeping homes cool in the summer and warm in the winter. As temperatures continue to get colder this time of year, it is especially critical to help people have adequate heat, and I have full confidence that the funds donated go directly to this important effort.
It is essential to have a reliable system in place to cool or heat your home, and the funds donated to Project Share support this very thing.”
