Meet Brandon, Huntsville Utilities Crew Leader
Brandon Holt is a self-proclaimed “jack of all trades” and family man.
Originally from Tennessee, Brandon started his career in Florence remodeling houses. Once he met his wife from Hazel Green, they settled in the Huntsville area where they raised two kids (and recently welcomed a grandbaby!).

With a background in construction handling heavy equipment, joining Huntsville Utilities felt like a natural fit.
Brandon started as a crewman 20 years ago, then went through Huntsville Utilities’ three-year apprenticeship to become an operator. When he was asked to help start up the Leak Detection team 15 years ago, it was the perfect opportunity to blend his technical and leadership skills.

A day in the life finding Huntsville’s underground water leaks
So what exactly is “leak detection“? Simply put, it’s searching for leaks in water lines happening underground that are undetectable above surface. Finding and fixing these leaks saves thousands of gallons in water loss, saving money and resources in the long run.
How do they do it? By using state-of-the-art listening devices to listen for water leaks.
🧐 🎧 Imagine a cross between a stethoscope and a metal detector that allows Brandon and his crew to listen underground. When they pick up a higher-than-usual frequency, that’s a clue that water could be leaking.
On the average day, here is what the Leak Detection team is doing:
- 🗺️ Studying maps of Huntsville’s underground systems
- 📊 Analyzing monthly meter reports of pumping stations + water tanks to find unaccounted for water
- 🎙️ Placing “loggers” on water valves to record noise activity at low-use hours
- 🚶Walking 7-22 miles in neighborhoods listening to every water meter to find leaks in service lines
- ❎ Marking + submitting underground leaks for Huntsville Utilities crews to fix
3 reasons he loves his job in Leak Detection
1. The “hunt”
Since joining Leak Detection 15 years ago, Brandon has familiarized himself with the city and its “trouble spots.”
He took us to a Madison neighborhood that is notorious for leaks, and within just one hour, Brandon identified an underground leak and submitted it to be fixed.
To my surprise, if you stood still, you could faintly hear water gushing underground—even though nothing was coming to the surface!
“I really do love leak detection—it’s rewarding to find a big leak and be able to say, ‘Hey, I helped find that.’
It kind of gives you that kid-feeling of hunting Easter eggs.”

2. Making a real impact on the community
Beyond the thrill of the hunt, Brandon is passionate about sparing our community from unnecessary water loss.
About 90% of leaks he finds are in service lines or leaky toilet valves, but some of his most rewarding finds include:
- 📍Huntsville: Found two of the biggest main breaks in Huntsville Utilities history (one that nearby locals thought was actually a natural spring for almost 20 years—0.25 miles away from the leak!)
- 📍Harvest-Monrovia: When an area in Madison County lost water pressure, Huntsville Utilities crews brought their state-of-the-art equipment to help our neighbors find the root of the cause.
3. Building up the Leak Detection program for the future
Brandon’s crew is small but mighty—the pair have taken Leak Detection to a “completely new level” since dedicating every day to proactively find leaks with the best equipment available.
