What if a simple test could help you understand your risk for certain diseases before symptoms ever appear, or even help your doctor choose medications that work best for your body?

That’s exactly the goal of Catalyst, a free genetic testing program from Southern Research, now available to all adults in Alabama, including right here in Huntsville.

Catalyst is designed to empower Alabamians with knowledge about their hereditary health risks early so individuals and families can make informed, proactive decisions about their health. And the best part? The entire process starts with a free, easy-to-use at-home test kit.

What is Catalyst?

Catalyst is a statewide genetic testing initiative that gives participants access to advanced health insights at no cost. By analyzing your DNA, the program provides personalized information that can help you and your healthcare provider better understand potential risks and treatment options long before health issues arise.

Once you sign up, Catalyst sends a test kit directly to your home. After completing the test and mailing it back, you’ll receive your results along with the opportunity to meet with a genetic counselor who can walk you through what everything means for you and your family.

It’s science-backed, secure and designed to be approachable for everyday Alabamians. (Find out more here.)

What you’ll learn from your test results

If you choose to participate in Catalyst, your results can provide valuable insights in three key areas:

1. Genetic health risks
Your report may reveal inherited risk factors for conditions like heart disease, diabetes or certain cancers. This doesn’t mean you will develop these conditions, but it does give you a clearer picture of what to watch for and discuss with your doctor.

2. Pharmacogenomic results
Pharmacogenomic testing looks at how your genes affect the way your body responds to medications. The results can show which medications may work best for you, and even which ones you might want to avoid due to side effects or reduced effectiveness.

3. Shareable insights for your doctor
Catalyst provides information you can bring directly to your healthcare provider, helping guide more personalized treatment decisions now and in the future.

Why pharmacogenomic testing matters (especially in Alabama)

Medications don’t work the same way for everyone, yet many people go through trial-and-error prescriptions before finding what works. Pharmacogenomic testing helps change that.

For Alabamians—particularly those managing chronic conditions—this type of insight can mean fewer side effects, more effective treatment plans and better long-term outcomes. It’s a practical example of personalized medicine, made accessible to communities across the state.

And because Catalyst is free and funded by the state, it removes one of the biggest barriers to accessing this kind of advanced health information.

Yes, the test is really that easy!

One of the most common hesitations around genetic testing is the process.

The at-home kit arrives with clear instructions and takes just a few minutes to complete. No lab visits. No needles. Once you’re done, you send it back using prepaid packaging. From there, Catalyst handles the rest.

When your results are ready, you’ll have the option to speak with a genetic counselor who can help explain what the findings mean in plain language.
