Huntsville High grad prepares for MLB postseason with Reds

The Major League Baseball regular season has come to an end, and the postseason starts up today with several early round match-ups. One such game will happen this evening in Los Angeles as the Dodgers take on the Cincinnati Reds.

That game will actually feature Huntsville ties, pitcher Graham Ashcraft is in the Reds pitching rotation.

The Reds announced their postseason roster, which was cut to 25 players, and Ashcraft was listed among the 12-man pitching staff. This will be Ashcraft’s first appearance in the postseason.

The Reds will play a best-of-3 series against the Dodgers, with games scheduled for the following times:

  • September 30, 8:08PM
  • October 1, 8:08PM
  • October 2 (if necessary), 8:08PM

If the Reds go on to win the series against Los Angeles, they would face the Philadelphia Phillies in a best-of-five series.

Ashcraft’s journey to the show

Ashcraft grew up in Gurley and attended Huntsville High School, graduating in 2016. He was selected in the MLB draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers, but chose to accept a baseball scholarship to Mississippi State instead.

As a freshman he went 2–0 with a 5.63 ERA and 25 strikeouts in ten appearances. Ashcraft transferred to UAB following is freshman season, and after sitting out one season due to NCAA transfer rules, he went 2–5 with a 5.62 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 53 innings over 17 pitching appearances

The Reds selected Ashcraft in the sixth round of the 2019 Major League Baseball draft, the highest-selected player in the MLB draft from UAB that year.

He was promoted to the Reds’ major league roster on May 20, 2022 and made his MLB debut on May 22, tossing 4.1 innings against the Toronto Blue Jays and allowing two earned runs.

So far, he is 25-25 with a 4.76 E.R.A. and 303 strikeouts over four seasons.
