The 5-story, 154,000-square-foot project will add 120 beds as well as a cardiothoracic intensive care unit, a neuro intensive care unit for neurosurgical and stroke patients, three floors of new acute medical space and a new and improved emergency department vehicle entrance.
The project will also convert 70 existing patient rooms from double occupancy to single occupancy. When the expansion is complete, the hospital will have a total of 931 patient beds, up from 881 currently.
“Expanding the Madison Street Tower will give us the space to meet the advanced health care needs of North Alabama and southern Tennessee for decades to come.”
Jeff Samz, President and CEO of Huntsville Hospital Health System
Lead contractor Robins & Morton — the firm that built the Madison Street Tower in 2006 — said the project is scheduled for completion in 2027.
Changes during construction

When the project was approved, the ER entrance at Huntsville Hospital moved from Madison Street to Gallatin Street.. The Madison Street entrance will remain closed for the majority of the construction project.
Here’s what to know about the new ER entrance:
- Visitors to the ER should plan to enter on Gallatin Street.
- Visitors should also note that St. Clair Avenue between Madison and Gallatin streets will be closed to through traffic.
- Signage will be installed throughout the medical district notifying ER traffic to use the Gallatin Street visitor parking entrance until further notice.
