Maple Hill Cemetery, one of the largest (and oldest) cemeteries in the state, is about to get even larger. The City of Huntsville recently purchased land adjacent to the cemetery to accommodate expansion plans.
Here’s what to know:
Maple Hill Cemetery expansion on the way

The City of Huntsville entered into a purchase and sale agreement last week with DBP, LLC to acquire 1.1 acres on the east side of Maple Hill Cemetery located at 1321 McClung Ave. SE.
The land will be part of the cemetery’s future expansion plans which are currently in development.
Maple Hill is a Huntsville treasure

Among more than 80,000 people buried at Maple Hill are some famous Alabamians. This includes former Major League Baseball player Don Mincher, women’s suffragist Priscilla Holmes Drake, actor Harry Townes and former Studebaker Motors president Albert Erskine, among others.
In fact, five Alabama governors are buried at Maple Hill:
- Thomas Bibb (1782–1839), served 1820 to 1821.
- Clement Comer Clay (1789–1866), served 1835 to 1837; formerly a U.S. representative; later a U.S. senator.
- Reuben Chapman (1799–1882), served 1847 to 1849; formerly a U.S. representative.
- Robert M. Patton (1809–1885), served 1865 to 1868.
- David P. Lewis (1820–1884), served 1872 to 1874.
Specific plans for the cemetery’s expansion have not been released.
