The $50 million Lewter District project was developed and constructed by Emergent Properties and RNGD, which opened a local office within the district. The development consists of three elements:

  • The Lewter District Townhomes, a community of 14 luxury residences on Washington Street
  • The restoration and renovation of the historic Lewter Hardware Company building, which houses Brick & Tin, a farm-to-table casual restaurant, bar and bakery
  • The 223 Washington office building — a five-story, 75,000-square-foot, Class-A office building that now houses the Maynard Nexsen law firm

Lewter Hardware opened in 1928 and stayed in business until 2023. The purchase of the Lewter property and subsequent redevelopment of the property was the subject of concern for many Huntsville historians.

However, effort has been made by the developers and real estate brokers to maintain the integrity of the property and maintain at least some of the history behind it.

“We are growing in a lot of different directions. And what’s even more exciting than the development is the re-development here in Huntsville. We are excited to live the next part of this property’s life with you.”

Tod Dodgen, managing shareholder with Maynard Nexsen, is a Huntsville native and the first tenant of the 223 Washington office building. He shared he is proud to work in the historic district:

“I used to take my kids here, I got my screws and nails here at Lewter Hardware. I came here when I was younger. Partnering with these guys has been a super decision for us, and he response has been overwhelmingly positive.”
