Morgan County Sports Hall of Fame inducts new 2026 class

The Morgan County Sports Hall of Fame will honor its 2026 class in June, a class that includes seven athletes with Morgan County ties. The class includes former baseball, football and basketball players, and even a stock car racer.

Introducing the 2026 Morgan County Sports Hall of Fame inductees

The 2026 inductees into the Morgan County Sports Hall of Fame are:

  • Gary Knotts: A member of the Brewer High School Class of 1995, Knotts pitched in the major leagues for four seasons with the Marlins and Detroit Tigers.
  • Nathaniel “Nate” Holmes: Nate Holmes starred in football and basketball at Decatur High, graduating in 1967. He became the first African American player at UT-Martin, where he earned All-America honors in 1971.
  • Mark McClanahan: A star guard on Austin’s 1973 Class 4A state championship team, McClanahan played baseball at Auburn and pitched for the Tigers’ 1976 SEC championship team that advanced to the College World Series.
  • Kenneth Cole: A Decatur High School grad, Cole played nose guard was a Super All-State selection in 1976. Cole played linebacker at Vanderbilt University.
  • Rhea Greenwell: Greenwell starred for Decatur High School in football, basketball and track, but made a name for himself in stock car racing, including racing at Daytona International Speedway in 1971.
  • Billy Don Sharp: Sharp played center on Priceville’s 1965 state championship basketball team and went on to play in college at Calhoun and Saint Bernard.
  • Leigh Anna McDaniel Trimble: Trimble was a standout basketball player at Austin High School, leading the team to a state championship game berth in 1994. She went on to play at Northwest Shoals CC and the University of North Alabama.
  • Judge Glenn Thompson: Thompson has been a major contributor for many years to the Morgan County Sports Hall of Fame as a board member, and has been a staple in the community at an attorney and a judge.

The banquet to induct the Morgan County Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2026 will be held on June 20 at the Cook Museum of Natural Science.
