Get ready to brush up on the quaint shops in downtown Athens. High Cotton Arts and Athens Arts League are teaming up to host a downtown Art Walk on the Square starting this Saturday, July 8.

The Athens Art Walk is a new initiative to encourage the community to explore the local art and shops of downtown Athens.
“The Square in Athens is a nice little walking tour, and we’re trying to get people who are interested in art to come out and visit our shops that carry art or offer art programs and classes.”

From guided paint classes at the Broken Brush to locally-made art and decor, there is plenty to discover on the Art Walk.
A new monthly event
This Saturday is the first in a series of monthly Art Walks. The event aims to create a vibrant atmosphere where visitors can support the local community and engage with and appreciate local art.
“We have a lot of really good, talented people in Athens. We already have lots of music events here, but this Art Walk was just something new that we wanted to try out and bring to downtown.”

Hosted by High Cotton Arts + Athens Arts League
The Art Walk is a joint effort of High Cotton Arts and Athens Arts League, a non-profit art organization supporting artists and promoting art education.
High Cotton Arts is a project of Athens Arts League—it’s a quaint art incubator and gallery offering affordable gallery space to local artists and community art classes. Sonya, local artist and manger of High Cotton Arts, said many visitors compare it to a mini Lowe Mill.

Sonya suggests starting the day at the Farmers Market with arts and crafts before venturing to downtown to explore the Art Walk.
You can pick up a flyer from Athens Tourism or High Cotton Arts and follow the pamphlet guide to visit participating stores. Enjoy snacks and refreshments in addition to local art displays and demonstrations.
Downtown Athens is very walkable and a lovely quaint area to explore. Whether you’re a local or a commuter, downtown Athens is a charming destination.
