The Tollgate Greenway project — spearheaded by the Land Trust of North Alabama — is 89 percent of the way to its fundraising goal, and the deadline to reach that goal has now been extended through October.

Here’s what to know:

Funding the Tollgate Greenway project

The Tollgate Greenway project has been given funds by the City of Huntsville (Land Trust of North Alabama)

The project will create a paved, multi-use greenway following a segment of the historic Toll Gate Road on Monte Sano.

The greenway will extend approximately 1.2 miles from the Land Trust of North Alabama’s Bankhead Trailhead parking lot through Monte Sano Nature Preserve to the old Bankhead Parkway within Monte Sano State Park.

In addition to providing pedestrians and bikers a safe and scenic route to travel on the western slope of the mountain, this new path will offer access to nature for people with limited mobility who cannot utilize the natural trails.

According to the Land Trust of North Alabama, $350,000 is still needed for the project, as the City of Huntsville has pledged to match up to $500,000 raised for the project.

How to help the effort

The Land Trust of North Alabama is asking the public to help match the city’s pledge so that the Tollgate Greenway can become a reality. To donate, visit the Land Trust’s website donation page.
