With traffic becoming perhaps the biggest concern among Huntsville metro residents, any news regarding improvements and expansion to roads is welcome these days. And locals have plenty to be happy about this week, as announcements were recently made by Alabama Department of Transportation and City of Madison officials about road construction progress.

Three ALDOT projects were updated Friday, October 23, along with an update on a road project in Madison from city officials. These projects include:

  • Slaughter Road in Madison
  • North Day Hill Road in Harvest
  • SR-127 in Limestone County
  • US-31 in Decatur

Madison County

In Madison, Mayor Ranae Bartlett released a statement Friday, October 23, announcing that $3.5 million was secured to add lanes to Slaughter Road. This busy corridor—which began as a two-lane county road—now carries a bevy of commuters through both Madison and Huntsville.

“For Madison families, additional lanes mean less time waiting in traffic and a smoother trip to work, school and everywhere in between.”

In Harvest, North Day Hill Road will temporarily close at its intersection with SR-53 for grading necessary for the widening of the highway, beginning October 26, 2026.

Rogers Group, the contractor on the project, anticipates the closure lasting about three weeks.

Signs will advise drivers of the detour (Robins Road to Stoney Point Drive to Sunshine Drive and vice versa).

Limestone County

ALDOT announced that resurfacing of about 4.5 miles of SR-127 in Limestone County will start Monday, October 26, weather permitting. Grayson Carter and Son Contracting will mill and resurface the two-lane highway from SR-99/Elm Street in Athens to Maples Circle.

ALDOT advises motorists to expect delays due to single-lane closures, with traffic directed by flaggers or a pilot vehicle. A timeline has not been released for this project.

Morgan County

Due to cooler temperatures at night, remaining paving on the US-31 resurfacing project in Decatur will take place during daytime hours beginning Monday, October 26.

The contractor has already completed paving on the causeway and around the SR-20 junction just north of the Tennessee River. They are currently paving in the vicinity of Calhoun Community College, where traffic volumes are much lower.

ALDOT elected to allow the contractor to switch to daytime hours so that paving can take place under optimal conditions, which they say provides better results.

To limit impacts to non-peak travel hours, ALDOT will restrict lane closures to the timeframes of 8:30AM to 3PM northbound and 9AM to 4PM southbound.

Lane closures for other work such as installing guardrail, traffic stripe and shoulder stone remain restricted to nighttime hours.
