New trail now open at Green Mountain Nature Preserve

One of Huntsville’s beautiful nature preserves has opened a new trail, as the Land Trust of North Alabama officially opened Green Mountain Trail North.

This trail gives hikers access to a new part of the preserve. Here’s more:

New trail at Green Mountain

Located off of SE South Shawdee Road on top of the mountain, the new 3.2-mile trail features rocky terrain in a forest setting with primary access from Riverview Drive.

Stretching north from Riverview Drive SE at the top of the mountain to Green Mountain Road, the route meanders along the mountainside featuring impressive boulders and quiet woodland, expanding access to a new part of the mountain.

The Land Trust of North Alabama acquired the property in 1997 and added 14 new parcels over the last 27 years to make this possible.

The 2-year trail construction project included 134 work days with 194 volunteers contributing 2,608 volunteer hours. Land Steward Tim Barnack oversaw the construction process.
