Of the 13 new million-dollar-plus building permits approved in Alabama this week, more than half of them are for projects in North Alabama, with a notable project being the new offices of Phil Waldrep Ministries in Decatur.

The $5 million project has been in the works for several months, and construction has begun on the project, expected to be completed this year.

The new office for Phil Waldrep Ministries was a pre-COVID project that has moved forward now that the pandemic has eased, and construction crews have already cleared out more than 30 acres for the structure.

The site is between the Under Par driving range and the Church at Stone River. The staff at Waldrep’s current office has reportedly outgrown its facility. Decatur’s Planning Commission approved consolidating two parcels between Danville Road and Oak Lea subdivision in November of 2022.

Here’s what we know about this project:

  • The permit is listed at $5 million
  • The office building will be approximately 19,000 square feet
  • Among the features of the 34-acre campus are a theological research library and a 1-acre prayer garden.
  • Dunlap Contracting Inc. is listed as the contractor
  • Pugh Wright McAnally did the engineering for the complex and 5R Designs did the architectural drawings

The nonprofit has 18 employees when it’s full-staffed. Waldrep said he expects to add more employees, and the new office will have room to accommodate them.
