What are Limestone County’s plans for a new animal shelter?

Limestone County, like every other county in Alabama, is required by law to operate an animal shelter. This helps control the animal population and keeps citizens safe from animals running at large.

The Limestone County Animal Care and Control department currently operates out of a facility at 521 US Hwy 72 W in Athens. Commissioners have said the county has outgrown that space and is unable to adequately function at its current facility.

When opened, the new facility will replace the current shelter.

County leaders expect to meet with architects this week to begin construction plans for the new facility, which will be located on South Jefferson Street in Athens. A timeline for construction will follow.
