While Memorial Day usually signals the beginning of summer and conjures images of sun and fun, this particular Memorial Day weekend in the Huntsville area is shaping up to be a stormy mess.

A flood watch has been issued for portions of North Alabama until 10AM Saturday, in addition to a severe thunderstorm warning for Friday afternoon. Additional rainfall between 1-3 inches is expected to fall which may lead to localized flash flooding, according to the National Weather Service.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Friday afternoon, and heavy rain is expected to continue throughout the weekend.

According to the NWS, strong storm systems could bring heavy storms in multiple rounds from late Friday night through mid-morning Saturday, late Saturday morning + afternoon and Saturday evening. All modes of severe weather are possible, including tornadoes.

The NWS posted on social media Friday, “If you have outdoor plans, be prepared for storms. If you hear thunder or see a flash of lighting, move indoors!”

When we do end up with severe weather warnings, make sure you follow basic storm safety precautions:

  • Have a plan + shelter place picked out in case of extreme weather
  • Bring your pets inside
  • Always make sure to have phone alerts or a radio keeping you informed
  • Prep an emergency kit ahead of time with food, water, first aid, phone chargers + extra clothing
  • When driving, be wary of downed power lines or trees
