Severe weather preparedness week is here: how you can prepare
Reading time: 2 minutes
We’ve already had our fair share of weird weather this year in North Alabama–I’m looking at you, ice week. That said, North Alabama is prone to experiencing fast changes in forecasts that we should all try to prepare for.
Make sure you take advantage of this weekend’s tax free holiday to stock up on any emergency preparedness items you might need. This is a great opportunity to review your severe weather plans and replenish emergency supplies that have been depleted since last year.
Severe weather supplies you’ll need this year
From Friday, Feb. 24 at 12:01AM to Sun., Feb. 26 at midnight, sales tax will be removed from several emergency preparedness items. This year, you should be sure to stock up on:
- Cell batteries (AAA, AA, C, D, 6-volt and 9-volt)
- Cellphone chargers
- NOAA weather radios
- Non-electric can openers
- First aid-kits
- Fire extingishers

What type of severe weather can you expect in North Alabama?
If you’ve moved to Huntsville recently, expect the spring to bring severe storms, lightning, flash floods and tornados. It’s possible for these weather events to happen anytime of year, but it’s more likely you’ll experience them in the springtime.
Have a plan, know the safest parts of your house and where the nearest tornado shelter is to you. Don’t forget to grab a battery powered NOAA weather radio to hear alerts and warnings.
