The Tollgate Greenway project has been given funds by the City of Huntsville and private donors. (Land Trust of North Alabama)

Beginning at the Land Trust’s Bankhead Trailhead and connecting with the closed section of Bankhead Parkway, the greenway will provide pedestrians and cyclists with a safe and scenic route along the western slope of the mountain.

The project aims to:

  • Expand outdoor access for hikers, walkers, cyclists and those with mobility limitations
  • Provide cyclists a safe route on the mountain
  • Improve off-road parking for safer traffic flow
  • Create education opportunities that highlight the history and ecology of the area
  • Establish a seamless, paved connection from Bankhead Trailhead to Monte Sano State Park

The City of Huntsville pledged $500,000 toward the project, while the remaining $500,000 was raised from private donors.

During the time of construction, Bankhead Trailhead at Monte Sano Nature Preserve will be closed to the public. Trail users are encouraged to visit another Land Trust trail or preserve while Bankhead will be closed.

The greenway is projected to open in the spring of 2026.
