Weather is always one of the many considerations when holding an outdoor event, and as the South Star Music Festival approaches — which is expected to bring masses of people to the area — the effects of Helene in the Gulf of Mexico is certainly a consideration.

According to local meteorologists, Helene is bringing rain to North Alabama, but by the time the festival starts, festival-goers should remain relatively dry.

Heavy rain expected to clear for South Star Festival

According to WAAY-31 meteorologist Grace Anello, Friday and Saturday morning will include a good bit of rain, but by mid-morning the heavy storms will have subsided.

“High temperatures this afternoon are considerably low for this time of year, rising to near 70 degrees. 70 degree high temperatures stick in the forecast for tomorrow with pockets of scattered rain possible in the early morning and again in the late afternoon. Saturday is not a washout.”

Another light shower is expected around lunchtime Sunday, Anello said. But she reiterated, “Neither Saturday nor Sunday is going to see enough rain to be considered anywhere near a washout.”

Flooding possible in North Alabama

A wind advisory is in effect until 1AM Saturday, and a flood watch is in effect through Friday afternoon. Again, by the time the gates open for the South Star Festival at 1PM Saturday, the heavy rainfall will be gone.

“As Helene tracks north and east of Atlanta, it will continue to bring widespread and very heavy rain to each of us later this evening and overnight. We do not have a tornado risk, though a flood watch and wind advisory are in place.”
