Here’s some good new for motorists in North Alabama: the westbound lanes of US-72/Florence Boulevard in Lauderdale County are now open to traffic.
Alabama Department of Transportation has been working on this road-widening project since October of 2023. The $24 million project expanded two miles of the four-lane highway to six lanes from Indian Springs Drive to Sky Park Road, west of Shoal Creek.

A 3-year widening project on Florence Boulevard

The contractor completed mainline paving earlier this month, but the outside westbound lane remained closed while the contractor completed transitions at intersections and driveways, placed shoulder stone and constructed a concrete island at the CR-27 intersection.
This summer, contractors installed a signal at the US-72 intersection with Mauldin Avenue and Career Drive, the entrance to the Lauderdale County Agricultural Center campus.
The eastbound outside lane remains closed for final work items along the road shoulder, including completion of a multi-use path. ALDOT anticipates the contractor reopening that lane in a few weeks.
