Most of us think alcohol and drug addiction don’t touch our everyday lives, clinging to the exaggerated stereotypes surrounding addiction. But the reality is, addiction is a lot more subtle and nuanced. According to JR Curbow, Bradford Health Services’ VP of Admissions, “addiction is an equal opportunity disease.”

However, even if you would like to reach out for help, it can be daunting to call. We asked JR to help us understand what happens after you make the call, plus how you can receive amazing support.

Asking for help is easier than you think. (Jacob Blankenship / Hville Blast)

When considering asking for help, it’s integral to evaluate the warnings signs of addiction, which can be any of the following:

  • Changing friends, peer group +/or relationships
  • Changing jobs
  • Isolating from friends + family

A key component to evaluating these signs is noting progressions and changes in your daily habits.

“It’s one thing to have a glass of wine at dinner. However, drinking in moderation can easily progress to the point that you’re waking up late, calling in sick for work, or taking PTO to cover the days when you have to rebound.

It’s important to pay attention to the amount of alcohol you are drinking as well. If you’re having four or six beers instead of the two you’ve always had when hitting the town with friends—that can be a warning sign.”

If you are concerned about yourself or a friend, take a look at these quick checklists for warning signs of alcohol and drug addiction.

Here’s what happens when you give Bradford a call:

  1. The person answering the phone is going to learn why you’re calling today to understand the pain you are in.
  2. They’ll walk you through a pre-screening to understand how your use is affecting every component of your life.
  3. They’ll formulate a recommendation for you—”based on everything you told us, we believe this is the path forward; we think you need to be admitted into this level of care.”
  4. At this point, resistance and fear are likely to come up, and they’ll work to encourage you to access care today.
