The weekend is creeping up on us (excuse the Halloween pun) and there are some cool things to do in the Rocket City this weekend — from live music to witches rides to the annual Microwave Dave Day.

Live music

Highlighting the live music slate this weekend is the annual Microwave Dave Day, the festival honoring Huntsville’s iconic musician at Stovehouse on Sunday.

Enjoy these live music events as well:

  • Huntsville Symphony Orchestra Presents the Music of Rocky Horror: Oct. 20, Mark C. Smith Concert Hall, 7:30PM. Get in the spirit of the spooky season with the HSO as they play the music of the beloved cult classic, “Rocky Horror Picture Show.”
  • Tim Cannon: Oct. 20, Stella’s Elixir Lounge, 5PM. Enjoy an autumn Friday at Stella’s with the tunes of Huntsville’s Tim Cannon.
  • Whistlestop BBQ Festival: Oct. 20-21, MidCity, Fri. 5PM, Sat. 11AM. The Whistlestop Festival is back and at a new venue in MidCity. Check out JJ Grey & Mofro, Silver Silos and more.
  • Microwave Dave Day: Oct. 22, Stovehouse, 11AM. Celebrate one of Huntsville’s most iconic musicians at this festival at Stovehouse.
  • GWAR: Oct. 22, Mars Music Hall, 7PM. Those who have seen GWAR in person know this is not a show to miss. And those who haven’t should see it for themselves!

In addition to the Whistlestop Festival and Microwave Dave Day, we have some more festivals to catch in and around town — plus some more fun events to enjoy:

  • The Jungle Book: Oct. 20-22, Von Braun Center, Fri. 7PM, Sat. 1PM, 6PM, Sun. 1PM, 6PM. Fantasy Playhouse presents the beloved production of the Rudyard Kipling classic.
  • Horror Film Festival: Oct. 20-21, Orion Amphitheater, 5PM. Prepare for a scare this weekend with showings of “Black Swan, “Suspira” and more.
  • Outdoor Market at Lowe Mill: Oct. 21. Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment, 11AM. Catch the last Outdoor Market of the year at Lowe Mill Saturday.
  • Joe Gatto’s Night of Comedy: Oct. 22, Mark C. Smith Concert Hall, 7PM. “Impractical Jokers” star Joe Gatto brings his comedy show to Huntsville.
  • Madison Witches Ride: Oct. 22, Home Place Park, 3PM. The Madison Witches Ride this year will raise money for the new splash pad planned for the city. And be sure to stay for the Black Hat Block Party and Barks & Boos Pet Parade after the ride.

Sports + fitness

High school football is still in full swing, so you may want to catch a game Friday night before possibly joining in on a local 5K or watching a national cheer competition this weekend. Check out these events:

  • Alabama A&M Women’s Soccer: Oct. 20, Bulldog Soccer Field, 3PM. Come out and cheer on the AAMU Bulldogs’ women’s soccer team as they host Prairie View A&M.
  • Mae Jemison vs. Hazel Green: Oct. 20, Hazel Green High School, 7PM. Catch some awesome local high school football Friday night.
  • Liz Hurley Ribbon Run: Oct. 21, Downtown Huntsville, 7AM. One of Alabama’s largest 5K events and most anticipated fundraisers for breast cancer research is back.
  • Universal Cheerleaders Competition: Oct. 21-22, Von Braun Center, 9AM. Catch some of the most accomplished cheer squads in the country as they compete for the UCA title.
  • UAH Women’s Soccer: Oct. 22, Charger Park, 11AM. Cheer on the UAH women’s soccer team as they take on Tampa at Charger Park.
