Want to learn a new craft? Here are some welcoming places in Huntsville to find community with other crafters—suitable for the expert and the curious alike!
“Grandma hobbies” have been gaining popularity as a way to create unique items with some love stitched in. Anything from quilts to knitted sweaters to my personal favorite: embroidery!
Mentors in your favorite “grandma hobby” are all around Huntsville. You don’t have to be a grandma to have a seat at the table.
Where to find “grandma hobbies”
1. Free Library Classes
There is a crafting event at a branch of the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library nearly everyday. Here are my favorite picks:
- Adult Painting
- What: Painting with acrylic paints on canvas
- Where: Program Room – Madison Public Library
- When: Friday, July 18, 2-3:30PM
- Cost: Materials are provided but registration is required.

- Sewing Studio
- What: Three sweet hours sewing any project you have surrounded by other crafters in the area
- Where: Downtown Huntsville Library
- When: Saturday, July 19, 9:30AM-12:30PM
- Cost: You provide a sewing machine and project materials. They provide an iron, board, rotary cutters and cutting mat. Registration is required.

- Tatting on Tuesday
- What: Learn how to create tatting work (aka lace) to add pizzazz to any project.
- Where: South Huntsville Public Library
- When: Tuesday, July 22, 10AM-12PM

2. Sparkle Studio

Sparkle Studio pays homage to the cotton and weaving origins of their space as a teaching fiber arts studio inside Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment.
- What: Sit & Stitch is hosted by Amy Shelton and Nharah Clark, owners of Sparkle Studio. In their “enchanted forest cottage” loft, the possibilities are endless. Bring any project to work on, read a book from their reference library while sipping on available refreshments or just enjoy everyone’s company.

3. Lemon & Lavender

Have you attempted a sourdough starter and not have it go just right? Me too. Lemon & Lavender is here to help.
- What: Sourdough 101 Workshop, where Lemon & Lavender takes all the guesswork out of making a beautiful loaf. They send you home with the knowledge and formed loaf to bake the next day, along with a 100-year-old starter.

4. Silent Book Club

For those who love the idea of grandma hobbies but not so much the creation aspect: I recommend the Silent Book Club.
- What: Bring a book (or Kindle!) and dedicate yourself to reading silently for one hour. After the hour is over, you are free to socialize.
