Want to learn a new craft? Here are some welcoming places in Huntsville to find community with other crafters—suitable for the expert and the curious alike!

“Grandma hobbies” have been gaining popularity as a way to create unique items with some love stitched in. Anything from quilts to knitted sweaters to my personal favorite: embroidery!

Mentors in your favorite “grandma hobby” are all around Huntsville. You don’t have to be a grandma to have a seat at the table.

Sparkle Studio pays homage to the cotton and weaving origins of their space as a teaching fiber arts studio inside Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment.

  • What: Sit & Stitch is hosted by Amy Shelton and Nharah Clark, owners of Sparkle Studio. In their “enchanted forest cottage” loft, the possibilities are endless. Bring any project to work on, read a book from their reference library while sipping on available refreshments or just enjoy everyone’s company.
  • Where: Lowe Mill, Studio 103
  • When: Every Saturday, 12-4PM
  • Cost: Free, but you might be tempted to buy yarn from their fabulous selection

Have you attempted a sourdough starter and not have it go just right? Me too. Lemon & Lavender is here to help.

  • What: Sourdough 101 Workshop, where Lemon & Lavender takes all the guesswork out of making a beautiful loaf. They send you home with the knowledge and formed loaf to bake the next day, along with a 100-year-old starter.
  • Where: 108 Main St, Madison, AL 35758
  • When: August 17, 4PM
  • Cost: $70

For those who love the idea of grandma hobbies but not so much the creation aspect: I recommend the Silent Book Club.

  • What: Bring a book (or Kindle!) and dedicate yourself to reading silently for one hour. After the hour is over, you are free to socialize.
  • Where/When: Check socials of the Huntsville + Madison chapters
  • Pro Tip: Their calendar is pinned on Instagram
