Bridge replacement project in Florence started in March

The Mitchell Boulevard bridge is about half a mile north of the O’Neal Bridge, the Tennessee River crossing between Sheffield and Florence traveled by about 30,000 vehicles daily.
The ALDOT project, which began in March, is aimed at replacing the 88-year-old bridge one half at a time.
The new bridge will be longer and taller, improving clearance for traffic on SR-20. The structure will also be wider, with inside and outside shoulders in both directions to improve safety. ALDOT anticipates completion in early 2028.
