Gov. Kay Ivey recently signed off on a $300,000 grant intended to bring 100 new jobs, infrastructure improvements and a brand-new 57,000-square-foot Food City store to Athens.
Earlier this year, Gov. Ivey announced similar grants on the east side of Athens totaling $800,000 as a commitment to the future of Athens.
“North Alabama, particularly the Athens area, is experiencing astonishing growth boosted in part by the huge development in Huntsville, but also because Limestone County, plain and simple, is a good place to live and work.
I commend local leaders for embracing this growth and making the needed improvements to continue to make it a good place to live.”

The City of Athens has also pledged $322,000 in local funds to aid the project.

The funds are managed by Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs, a state agency which teams up with Alabama communities to improve quality-of-life through infrastructure improvements + resource management.
“This project is expected to be the catalyst for future growth and jobs in that area of Athens.
ADECA joins Gov. Ivey in supporting this project.”

The improvements will take place at the intersection of West Elm Street (U.S. Highway 99) and Lucas Ferry Road, and aim to widen the roads by adding deceleration and turn lanes while also streamlining the drainage system along the corridor.
