You need to know about these awesome places to go camping in North Alabama

With spring around the corner, we’re getting excited for all our favorite outdoor activities, including camping.

We’ve compiled some of our favorite spots around North Alabama that are only a short car ride (or RV ride!) away from Huntsville.

1. Joe Wheeler State Park

A short trip down Highway 72 will take you to Joe Wheeler State Park in Rogersville. The 2,550-acre resort park is right Wheeler Lake and has a full service marina, camping and cabins, 18 holes of golf, lakeside cottages and a waterfront lodge that includes a restaurant.

2. Ditto Landing

Located on the Tennessee River, Ditto Landing is actually in Huntsville. The campground is open to tents beginning March 1, and the RV park is open all year.

3. DeSoto State Park

This campsite nestled on top of Lookout Mountain was created by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the late 1930s.

Try kayaking, fishing, hiking, biking, repelling or going on a wildflower expedition. This site features both primitive and improved campgrounds for however you perfer to do your camping.

4. Lake Guntersville State Park Campground

Alabama’s largest lake is all yours when you go camping at Guntersville State Park. There are a variety of campsites and cabins to choose from on this 6,000 acre park.

The site also offers 18 holes of golf, a zip-lining course, an outdoor nature center, fishing, hiking and biking.

5. Cathedral Caverns

This natural wonder opened as a state park in 2000 and maintains a 60 degree temperature year round. The park itself boasts 493 acres and features primitive and improved campsites.
