Crestwood Medical Center’s new leader sees ‘unique opportunity’ in the Rocket City
Reading time: 4 minutes

As of April of 2026, Kyle Buchanan is the new president at Crestwood Medical Center, but he certainly isn’t new to the area—or the industry. Buchanan is a Tuscumbia native with more than 20 years of experience in the healthcare industry across operations, patient care and workforce engagement.
So, with Crestwood now part of the Huntsville Hospital System, Buchanan takes over a position that is much different than his predecessors. And while some might see this drastic change as a hindrance, Buchannan sees the hospital’s new direction as an opportunity.

A ‘unique opportunity’ for Crestwood Medical Center

Buchanan was hired just after the acquisition of Crestwood by Huntsville Hospital. He said this situation presents a “unique opportunity for Crestwood and the residents of Huntsville.”
Becoming part of the Huntsville Hospital System now makes Crestwood part of a much larger network of healthcare providers and gives patients access to a wider variety of specialized care.
“Not only do we have the opportunity to be part of what is already a successful healthcare system, but we also have access to care and services we did not have before. We have been very intentional with what we are doing during this transition.”
Kyle Buchanan, Crestwood Medical Center president
The ease in making the transition, Buchanan said, has more to do with the people involved than anything else. The adjustments that are being made are more about equipment and technology.
“In the last five months we have learned a lot from each other. We know that the people here at Crestwood are second to none. We have incredibly bright people here. So it’s more about upgrading our ‘stuff.’ We are looking to stabilize our equipment needs, upgrade our records system. We have the right people here—we just need the right equipment.”

The record-keeping is one of the major perks of the merger, Buchanan said. In essence, patients at Crestwood in the past would only have medical records in the database of medical offices within the Crestwood system. Soon, those records will be accessible throughout the entire Huntsville Hospital system.
Addressing change with the community

As expected, when a huge transaction happens like the one between Huntsville Hospital and Crestwood, people in the community are going to have concerns.
When the announcement was made that Huntsville Hospital was purchasing Crestwood, local residents feared that cuts would be made at Crestwood, or services would be moved from one hospital to the other or that emergency room operations and staff would not be the same.
Buchanan said he understands those concerns. But added that he also understands what is happening here in the community with its rapid growth and the need for top-notch healthcare infrastructure. Crestwood joining the Huntsville Hospital System will not cause any of Crestwood’s existing services to go away.
“When you see what is happening in the community, you have to look at how to serve a rapidly growing population. How can we have enough specialists? How can we provide the best emergency care? How can we meet the demands of the community?
We are working to identify both our strengths and our opportunities. And we are doing that working together with our network of sister hospitals and utilizing all of the resources we have available.”

Buchanan said the ultimate goal is making sure Crestwood grows at the same pace as the community it serves, adding that being part of the Huntsville Hospital System makes that possible.
