Development has been on the forefront of just about any news story happening in Huntsville and the surrounding areas, and another new development — the Village at Drake Farm — took the spotlight this past week.

The Huntsville City Council approved the re-zoning of more than 80 acres of the old Drake farm to make way for the new development. Here’s what we know:

The Huntsville City Council this week approved the re-zoning for 88.78 acres situated at the intersection of Cecil Ashburn Drive and Old Big Cove Road to make way for the Village at Drake Farm.

The look and plan for the new development will be similar to that of the Village at Providence.

According to Huntsville City Councilman David Little, the Villages at Drake Farm would include:

  • Shops, cafes and small businesses
  • Loft apartments surrounding the village center
  • A village park system featuring indigenous plant-life and a restored Big Cove Creek
  • The village will connect to the regional greenway system at Blevins Gap Nature Preserve to the west and Big Cove Creek Greenway to the east

“Some of our planners have mentioned how this will be transformative. The folks out in that part of the community have been looking for something like this, some amenities that keep them from driving over the mountain.”

David Little, Huntsville City Council

So much development in the Huntsville area

The Village at Drake Farm is the latest in a bevy of new developments in the Huntsville area that combine housing with green space, retail, restaurants and office space.

Developments like Hays Farm, Town Madison, Clift Farm, MidCity and the Village at Providence have all opened to tremendous success in the last couple of years.
