Huntsville Animal Services in dire need of community assistance: find out how you can help
Reading time: 2 minutes

Huntsville Animal Services is again at maximum capcity and is looking to our community for help.
Their website shows only four cats for available for adoption as of today—but that is not the full story. According to the shelter, they have 89 cats in the building with another 100 currently in foster homes.
The majority of the 89 cats in the building are in the nursery, quarantine area or the holding area. Meaning, they are not ready for adoption yet but the shelter still is taking care of them.
The shelter has also reported being at maximum capacity for dogs.

How you can help

The shelter has reached capacity level four on cats, meaning infrastructure is being incredibly strained and they may have to euthanize for space if the situation isn’t resolved.
Nobody wants to see that happen, so here are some ways you can help:
- Adoption: You can see the full list of animals available for adoption here
- Foster-to-rehome: In this program, you will care for the animal until it’s adopted by its forever family. This is also a great opportunity for the animal to socialize outside of the shelter.
- Foster-to-adopt: This program allows you to experience a 14-day trial period with an animal before permanent adoption. It can be thought of as a kind of “test drive”, to make sure the animal will fit well in your home.
- Sleep-over: This new program allows you to house an animal at your home for 1-4 days. This is a great way to help Huntsville Animal Services in the short-term, without any sort of long-term commitment.
If adoption or fostering isn’t in the cards for you, simply sharing the news with your friends or co-workers can go a long way!
