High-dollar building permits this week include new Food City

Of the 10 new building permits issued across the state this past week for projects exceeding $1 million, two are for projects in the Huntsville area.

One of those is for a new Food City location on Governors Drive. Here’s what we know about these new building permits:

Food City to open multiple locations in Madison County

The grocer will invest $90 million to build six new stores and create 1,350 jobs over the next five years. Developers broke ground on the Hampton Cove store — off US 431 and Taylor Lane — in July of last year.

The new permit issued last week is for the new location at 3608 Governors Drive NW. The permit is for $3.8 million and lists J A Street & Associates Inc. of Blountsville, Tenn., as the lead contractor.

According to a statement from Food City’s parent company, KVAT Food Stores Inc., the Governor’s Drive location has an expected opening date in the first quarter of 2025.
