Originating in 1970 in Wisconsin, Earth Day is now a globally recognized environmental movement. Marking its 56th anniversary on April 22, 2026, the Rocket City has plenty of ways to get involved.

The City of Huntsville Green Team is hosting several events, and others will be held with Huntsville groups. From community cleanups to outdoor fun, here’s how you can celebrate locally.

April 18: Earth Day @ Hays Nature Preserve

The City of Huntsville is partnering with The Alabama Cooperative Extension System to host a free family-friendly Earth Day event at Hays Nature Preserve. The event will have interactive displays, owl demonstrations, a petting zoo and plant giveaways. There will also be a selection of street foods such as hot dogs, snow cones and more.

April 18: Limestone County Master Gardeners Plant Sale @ LCMG Greenhouse

LCMG will have a variety of plants for sale (annuals, perennials, vegetables, natives, trees, shrubs and house plants), plus there will be gardening demonstrations, a silent auction, vendors and a kids craft area.

April 19: Cemetery Cleanup @ Lake Guntersville State Park

Friends of Lake Guntersville State Park invite you to help keep the park beautiful by clearing downed limbs and debris and any invasive plants along the edges and trails at State Park Cemetery.

April 22: Earth Day cleanup @ Bud Cramer Park

The Green Team is hosting a park cleanup, welcoming all ages in efforts to help keep Huntsville beautiful. This is a great opportunity for the whole family to engage with the city and make a difference, all supplies provided.

April 22: Earth Day @ Madison Public Library

Children’s nature author Heather Montgomery and Master Naturalist Beth Girard will be at the Madison Public Library to celebrate Earth Day. This event is open to all ages and a good choice for families, young readers and those interested in nature.

April 22: Trail building + community hiking opportunity @ Hickory Cove

The community is invited to join Tim Barnack in building a new trail that will connect Hickory Cove to Monte Sano. No experience is needed, but volunteers are asked to bring water, wear closed-toed shoes, and be prepared to hike up to 4 miles. You must sign up in advance and fill out a waiver.

April 26: Trail Care @ Cane Creek Canyon

If you missed the opportunity earlier in the month, you can join Cane Creek Land Stewards again with some trail care work: building natural steps and water control features, updating trail markers and assisting with trail cutbacks and clearing debris from trails.
